5.27.11 shatter - a drabble of 100 words

[nostalgia: from the Greek words nostos which means “homecoming” and algos which means “pain”]

When I remember the autumn sky filled with stars, the beach with the waves sparkling in the sun right before they crash on the shore, the silent snows, the soggy springtime earth; when I recall the faces that I love, those close enough to hug and those who reside now only in my heart, the dear faces so changed and yet still the same; I feel a painful twist in my belly. It makes sense now, that aching to go back.

[that’s why it’s called nostalgia]

5.21.11 Cloudy Skies and Sunshine

It was the storm that woke me. I know because I remember thinking how peculiar it was that rain matched my tears so perfectly. Of all the seamen and crews aboard the vast fleet, I was the only one who mourned. My elder brother, the one who had protected me all my life, the man I had looked up to, the one I had trusted in most, was dead. In the midst of that forceful gale, I closed my eyes and remembered our last day together. A day spent laughing in the rays of sunshine. And it warmed my heart.
