Somewhere in the Grey

Right down that road. Can you see it?
It’s beyond that turn. Down that hill.

Off in the distance it awaits.
Tell me if you see it, would you please?
I’m trying to avoid it.

But it still sits there, ominous and growing. Breathing.

For you see, I can’t live forever. And my death is fast approaching.

Somewhere in the grey area. Beyond where I can see.

It’s haunting, forcing me to run away.

Where can I run that death can not find me? Where it can not reach out it’s pasty fingers and grab hold?

Perhaps behind the grey?

An Oftentimes Fool

Well.
It had all come down to this. How had he lived his life before? Clearly, he realized, he hadn’t lived it to the fullest.
He smirked. Though there had been some great moments. Indeed.
He had to admit though, that they usually ended with a poor outcome.
Even now! At this one moment.
It had been a wonderful night. He hadn’t realized who that beautiful woman was.

But now he kneeled in front of her father.
Who also happened to be the king of the land.

“Who is this man?”
“He is a fool.”

Indeed. More often than not.

Losing Language

Losing hope.
Worse than that, we are losing language.

Perhaps they are equally disastrous.
Without the language there is no hope.
Without the hope there is no need to speak.

They have come.
They are taking our language. They keep us quiet.
They train our children in silence, for silence.

Our tongues are tied. Our hands are free.
Without our speech, there is no revolution.
It is to late for a barricade.

We are dumb. In all meanings of the word.

Hail the oncoming silence of the masses.

Our children will be known as the first Children of the Silence.

The Outskirts of Town

Some say he lives there willingly, choosing that over death.
Outside the protection of many may as well be death.
Yet still he lives, perhaps… no one knows. Rumors are that he has died.

They say his woods are cursed. Few dare enter.

But there are those that leave the protection, and never come back.
Still others leave, but come back bruised and bloody.
They go out to find him, to kill him.

It is rumored that he murdered a woman, and that is why he must live on the outskirts of town.

I am he.

But I am innocent.

the outskirts of town

The brick buildings that line the old gravel road seem to sway, the smoke rising from the roofs following suite. I look at the long rectangular shape in front of me. I knew why I was here and what I needed to do. But knowing and doing are two very different things and I found myself longing to be back in the warm house in Chicago. Surrounded by my Mom and Dad and little Lucy instead of the brick houses that lay but 50 yards in front of me.
Fate is a funny thing.
I couldn't tell you why or how, but, for some reason, here I am, penniless and without a family to call my own.
