Extreme (for 5.23.11)

On my way to a friend’s house, I pass a place that makes me shiver: an abortion center. My heart shivers as I think about how many young mothers have killed their babies out of fear, embarrassment, and confusion.

Parked in front of the building was a van with a sign in the back window. The words on the sign are extreme. Extremely thought provoking, extremely sad, and yet extremely angering. The Killing Place.

Those words are disturbing, but true. In that place they end magnificent lives, before they begin. Those babies may have been mistakes for the parents, but they were no mistake to God.

5.15.11 Upcoming Arrival

The woman rests her hands on her growing belly and thoughts race through her mind as she thinks of the upcoming arrival of this little one.

“Mrs. Hawthourne?”

When she hears her name, the woman stands and follows the nurse through the door.

Minutes later, the nurse spreads the ointment on her stomach and presses a tool to the woman’s belly.

An outline of a body fills the screen.

“There’s the baby!”

The nurse points out the arms, legs, and body when a soft, thumping sound interrupts her.

The heartbeat.

The woman says a silent prayer; she has grown to love this baby.

5.11.11 giggle - a drabble of 100 words

She didn’t know what she did. She didn’t know what it was that made it happen. The little baby sitting in the high chair in front of her was covered in bananas and rice cereal. (That combination takes approximately three washings to take out all the sticky.) She could see his two little teeth, white nubs poking out of pink baby gums. His mouth was open wide. His chubby belly was shaking. His blue eyes twinkled and sparkled with the joke only an eighteen-month-old would understand.

She closed her eyes and let the sound of baby laughter wash over her.
