The Trees Could Have Lived

She was head over heels for him, no question about that. It is not her fault that this was never going to happen. It is not her fault that the only idea she had about that situation was to write. So write him she did.

She wrote so many words. Line upon line. Page upon page. Pouring out her heart and soul. Begging for some response from him. You could have wallpapered Buckingham Palace with the letters she wrote to him. And the letters just kept coming. Day after day after day.

She could have just sent him a text.

Jagged Edges {there's fear}

Don’t get too close. I might hurt you.
It’s not purposeful. Trust me.
I don’t want to cause you pain.
It’s just that I’m a little broken in all the wrong places.
You know, against the grain. I’m ragged— they haven’t been neat tears.
More than scars—they’re physical demarcations. Deformations.
And if you get too close my serrated edges. They will cut you.
In all the wrong places. They will more than leave scars.
You’ll be deformed. Like me.
I don’t want that for you.
Don’t get too close. I might hurt you.

{it’s ok. I can heal you}

Subtle love

I can't believe that we've known each other for so many years. We both
love the silly, little things. Remember that time that we saw those balloons and
you started acting like a five year old? You never fail to make me laugh. I've said
more times than I can count that I love nothing more than tomorrow; it's brighter
than today. You have a new chance to do something brave, something insane
tomorrow. But now, this is the most insane thing I've done. I can't ever top this.

You should probably read the first word of each line now...

on love, emotion, and commitment (a double drabble)

LOVE: A strong affection (a moderate feeling or emotion) for another arising out of kinship or personal ties. (Merriam-Webster Dictionary)
Would we demote love to this simple definition?
Love is not merely a strong affection; neither does it arise out of kinship or personal ties. For love is death to self (no moderate feeling would promote this) and it reaches far beyond those we will ever meet.
Only in the 4th definition given by Merriam-Webster do we find something closer to a complete meaning.
LOVE: “an unselfish, loyal benevolent (marked by or disposed to doing good) concern for the good of another.”
This, more or less, is love; concern for another despite personal desires, despite fickle feelings. It is everlasting; it is binding.
But again, it is so much more. It is an emotion that feels fiery passion, but is not driven by this unpredictable force; rather it is driven by the desire for good in another, a desire for hope, and peace for another even at the cost of your own happiness. But even more importantly it is the action upon this drive.
“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13 (ESV)

regarding you {forever and always}

On spring twilights I’d like to go dancing in a parking lot.
On summer evenings I’d like to sit and watch the sunset and hold your hand.
On autumn afternoons I’d like to jump in some crunchy leaf piles with you.
On winter mornings I’d like to cuddle next to you and sip a not-too-hot mocha.
And when the storms come and when the darkness falls I’ll be forever truly yours.
And when the sun shines and when the mist rises, I’ll stand here next to you.
Because in every season, on every day I’d like to be with you.

Kermit the Hermit and the fair maiden (for 5.18, 19, 20.13)

Kermit the hermit lived on the most wondrous mountain. It was tall, majestic, misty, and magical. The sun always shone even when it rained and the birds chirped secret messages to each other. Kermit enjoyed frolicking with the unicorns and chatting with the fish. He lived in solace in a particularly beautiful meadow but one day a fair maiden somehow found her way into his wonderland. She was the practical sort, calm cool and collected; the sort that hated being lost.
“Excuse me,” she called, impatient with her own folly, “can you tell me the fastest way down the mountain?”
 ...
Kermit turned. Love. At. First. Sight. He was enthralled. When he looked at her all the birds stopped chirping and all the unicorns stopped frolicking. The mist lifted and even the waterfall ceased to flow. The maiden cleared her throat and again stated her question.
“oh, sorry.” The hermit blushed and averted his eyes. “It’s just that I’m not quite used to company—especially of the female sort.”
Sheepish grin.
The maiden was not amused.
“Yes, well, would please just point me in the right direction.”
“Umm actually I would like to ask you to stay here with me forever.”
 ...
Again the maiden was not amused.
Raising her eyebrows she exclaimed, “Please, just tell me the quickest way down the mountain. I don’t want to live with you.”
Kermit the hermit was nothing short of heartbroken.
“Fair lady, it’s just that I am quite sure that I love you. However, to please you I will answer your question. The fastest way down the mountain is just down that path.”
Without a word the maiden turned and followed the path Kermit had indicated. As she walked out of sight the hermit knew he would never love so deeply or truly again.

small talk

"Can't find what you're looking for, huh?"
"Yeah. My wife sent me out to get some pam for the brownies she's making.
What's Pam anyway? She expects me to know, but, quite frankly, I really don't. Heck, the only thing I can cook is a poptart, but she doesn't let me eat those, says it's not good for my health."
He clutches his swollen belly.
"Don't see where she's coming from, to be honest! But, I love her. 63 years and I wake up every morning with her next to me and i think to myself, 'Can't believe we've put up with each other for this long.'"
His hand finds the Pam on the shelf.
"I think I'm gonna go buy her a dozen roses. Just 'cause I love her so much."

Flowers of Despair (For 5.23.12)

I kneel by your headstone, your finial bed.

You died too soon. I never got to know you. There are so many things I wanted to teach you. I waited so long for you. I wanted you, looked forward to meeting you. I loved you with all my heart. I still do. Even though you are gone, I dream of meeting you. I never dreamed that I could love and miss someone so much, especially someone I only met once.

“I love you,” I whisper.

My tears fall onto the flowers by your grave; my tears watering the despair in me.

5.27.12 Variable

You think because you failed suddenly I don’t love you?
You think because you held another closer now I’ve turned away?
You’ve said those terrible words.  I heard you.
You’ve thought those blackened thoughts.  I saw them.
You shoved a hurting man away.  I felt it.
And now you cower in the darkness.  You think that’s where you belong.

NO.        I’M STILL HERE.

The only thing that can ever change is the circumstance, love.

I want you just the same.
I care just the same.
I love you just the same, child.
There’s never going to be a variable there.

(for 5. 22.2012) Absence Makes The Heart Grow Colder

(Double drabble.. sorry! :) )

He kissed her head as she leaned into him.
“I’m going to miss you,” she whispered.
He just nodded, unable to find the words.
His flight was called and he separated from her.  She stared at him, her eyes bright with unshed tears as her jaw clenched, refusing to let them fall. But he saw them. He picked up his bags and stared hard at her, memorizing every detail. He attempted at a half smile.
“Absence makes the heart grow fonder?”
She shook her head, running her fingers under her eyes, wiping away the tears building. “Not that I’ve heard.”

She screamed as the knife was thrust into her again and again.
“Quick man! End it! Cops are coming!”
Gunshots rang out as sirens approached, wheels screaming on pavement. Sneakered footsteps pounded in the opposite direction.
They left her, her blood pooling underneath the sweatshirt he had given her.
She couldn’t move, everything was going cold.
She whispered his name, and her bright eyes dulled, never to see his face again.
The emergency help was too late.
He knelt in front of the coffin, weeping unashamedly.
He stared at her cold dead face.
“Absence only makes the heart grow colder.”

(May 17th) Love

Love.
What a word.
Love. Such an emotion.
It makes heartbeats pound. It makes your heart ground suddenly.
It’s terrifying and exhilarating.
It comes in so many forms. The love between a brother and sister.
Careful, it can tear a person apart. The love is strong, but so vulnerable.
The love between two sisters. Careful, don’t come between with malicious intent, this is a bond not easily broken.
There is the love that’s outside of family. Makes the phrase so direly important.
I love you.
Know the words. Do not trivialize them.
Don’t toy with them. This is important.

5.14.12 Down Bandit

[dedicated to my very dear friend, Nicole]

“Down bandit!  To your knees!”
Am I not a warrior?  Am I not the scourge of the southeast?
But I fall to my knees regardless.  There’s nothing left for me.  Yes.  Ready to die.
He strikes me.  My vision goes dark.  Blood spews from my face.  And I fall.
Fall to the depths of the pool.
                Please let me die.
She’s watching, her little hands pressed to her mouth in fear.  Tears mark her face.
                I love you, she whispers.
Who dares love me?  Who dares beg me not to die?
                Live, she cries.
Is love enough to save me?

5.31.11 luminous - a drabble of 100 words

Sixty-two years is a long time. Did you always hold her hand the way you are right now? I wish I could see her with your eyes. When I look at her I see a frail, fragile woman, with wrinkles and sagging skin. I see an old woman confused, who doesn’t even remember that she’s in the hospital and still thinks it’s 1972. What do you see, when you look at her? Do you see the girl you married? The mother of your children? Your lover? I guess you think she’s still beautiful.

Did you know you’re making me cry?

5.24.11 whisper - a drabble of 100 words

The wrinkle-lines of your face are as dear to me now as they ever were. The laugh-lines are so much deeper than the frown-lines. Remember, love, when we said “I do” and then we did? We changed our little world. Your strength made me strong and your love made me beautiful.

Let’s go on holding hands, for as long as we can, love. Your gentle snores the soundtrack of my nights. Your precious old blue eyes the first thing I see in the morning. Just remember, love, til death do us part. Then, and only then, shall I say goodbye.

5.24.11 Kisses

She looked at him, smiled, and drew him in close. It was just as Aunt Betty had said: true love at first sight.
So, she kissed him quietly in the privacy of the parlor. She kissed him loudly in the kitchen for attention. She kissed him quickly under the steps before dashing outside. She kissed him softly at night before climbing into bed. She kissed him lovingly in the town.
She kissed him until his head fell off and rolled across the dirt.
And then she cried as Aunt Betty told her she would never buy her another doll again.

a seemingly unrelated title that will throw you off when you start reading and make you go 'whaaaaaa?'. or if you're spanish '¿quéééééééééé?'

i almost started writing a dramatic, depressing drabble. but then i thought, the world has too much depression and sadness. why add to it? why not...

LAUGH!!!

i loooooooooooove to laugh (ha ha ha ha) loud and long and cleeeeeeeear.
i looooooooooooove to laugh (ha ha ha ha) so everybody can hear!
the more i laugh (ha ha ha ha) the more i’m filled with glee (not the tv show. that also is filled with drama and depression. and bad acting)
and the more the glee (NOT THE TV SHOW! STOP THINKING ABOUT THAT!) the more i’m a merrier me!

5.15.11 Upcoming Arrival

The woman rests her hands on her growing belly and thoughts race through her mind as she thinks of the upcoming arrival of this little one.

“Mrs. Hawthourne?”

When she hears her name, the woman stands and follows the nurse through the door.

Minutes later, the nurse spreads the ointment on her stomach and presses a tool to the woman’s belly.

An outline of a body fills the screen.

“There’s the baby!”

The nurse points out the arms, legs, and body when a soft, thumping sound interrupts her.

The heartbeat.

The woman says a silent prayer; she has grown to love this baby.

Hurting Heart 5.10.2011

My heart hurts. It hurts for the girl I know. She is struggling. Trying to council the girl I am communicating with is so difficult. I don’t know how to explain Gods love to her when she feels like this. With something that awful that happened to her loved ones it is difficult to help her see His master plan, especially when I don’t see how that can be good for them, how that can show His love for them. It just doesn’t make sense. But I will love her, and try to show her His love.
My heart hurts.

5.1.11 sparkle - a drabble of 100 words

She looked at her ring finger on her left hand. There was nothing on it. But his hand was holding it. She looked back up into his eyes. Suddenly, she felt something cool slip onto her finger and he was speaking. It took a moment to register his words. Her heart started to beat faster, all the way to her throat, and her eyes started to tear up. “Marry me?” he asked.

She nodded, smiling so big her face felt in danger of breaking, and threw her arms around his neck.

There, on her left hand, was a distinct sparkle.
