Sunbreak

It is the best job and the worst job in the world. Every day, I bring the daylight. I am the hope each morning. I defeat the darkness.

But only in a way.

I also illuminate the darkness. I expose death, destruction, sorrow, pain. And there is no victory in this. They call it a sunbreak when I shine through the clouds with light shafts that look like divinity. In reality, I am hiding from the sorrow of this broken planet, seeking to shade my eyes as my own heart breaks.

I don’t know how much longer I can endure.

in haiku

the clouds that gathered
shaded the day with darkness
shroud me, cover me.

the rain falling down
stung the thirsty ground with spears
drown my dry spirit.

The rolling thunder
Filled my ears with distraction
Overwhelm my soul.

Lightning that brightens
Flashed across the dark skyline
Illuminate me.

Hail pounding, hurting
Wounding the earth, beating up
Bruise my tender heart.

The damp, muggy air
Weighing down the heavy wind
Suffocate my lungs.

But the sun came out
marked the sky with yellow warmth
dried up all my tears.

the storm is over
struck down but never destroyed
healing has begun.

5.15.11 Not What It Seems

With all of the horrid accounts circulating nowadays, you would think that wars were fought in grey places with misty mellow hills and skies stuck in some intermediate place between sun and dark. You would think there would be gloomy clouds and frigid weather, blowing winds and freezing rain. Perhaps fog that lies upon the ground waiting to choke someone. Perhaps overhanging bushes reaching out snag preoccupied stragglers. Perhaps war is one never ending night with stars no longer shining. Perhaps there is no light.
But no.
I’m fighting in the same sunshine that the children play in back home.

5.5.11 glisten - a drabble of 100 words

The rain was on and off all day, like a bipolar light switch that just couldn’t make up its mind. One moment it was sunny. The next moment, you’d better have your polka-dotted umbrella handy because the skies opened up.

But in the magical in between moment, the rain and the sunshine met and shook hands like old English gentlemen about to smoke their pipes. When that happened, I started looking for the rainbow.

I craned my neck this way and that, peering through the sunny rain. Up, up, up I looked. And then there were not one but two.
