How This Whole Thing Works

I love to drabble. Contrary to popular belief, a drabble is not at all related to drool or basketball or anything like that. A drabble is a short written work of exactly 100 words in length. I greatly enjoy drabbling for the challenge of making the words fit exactly into the prescribed length. Each word is precious and the writer must be very precise with the choice of language in order to achieve the highest emotional impact. Here are some examples of drabbles I've written.

As some of you may be aware, November is National Novel Writing Month, also known as NaNoWriMo. I participated for the first time last year and while it was enjoyable, I discovered I still prefer drabbling to noveling. Thus, this challenge was born. Each month in May I shall write a drabble a day. A Drabble A Day In The Month Of May. DrabDayMoMay. I know. It's a shameless copy of NaNoWriMo. But they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so we'll go with that for now.

I humbly invite all of you to join me in writing 31 drabbles in May. That's only 3,100 words, people. I am firmly convinced you can do it. However, if that seems daunting, fear not! I have a plan. On Saturdays, we have a special feature called "Weekly Words" (at least until someone comes up with a better name). I shall assign a title here on Thursdays and we all shall write a drabble for that title and post it here on this blog on Saturdays. That's only 100 words a week, people, and I'm giving you three days in which to do it. You can do it! GO YOU!

If you are joining in for the Weekly Words, just let me know and I'll make you an admin so that you can post it here. For those doing the Daily Drabbles, we can post those here as well. Just make sure that you put the date first in the title.

So there you have it. A May challenge. 3,100 words for those who feel especially challenged or 400 words for those who feel so inclined.

I can't wait to see what we write!

  1. Yay! I'd love to do it!
I'll definitely do the Saturday ones and I'll do as many daily ones as I can fit into my schedule. :)
