Prepared, organized and ready, we waited for the faces. Suddenly, a stampede of excited children flooded the church basement as the laborious tech rehearsal ended. We had caged ourselves into a little corner where we would, through the art of make-up, create the creatures of Wonderland. The middle schoolers who walked into our pen left as mock turtles, mice, cats, birds, griffins, kings, queens, duchesses, mad hatters, and caterpillars. The transformations were amazing. The majority of the characters had been created when a duck walked up to our pen and informed us that “I look like a banana zombie.”
