5.14.11 Blank Pages

It wasn’t easy being an apprentice to the greatest cryptology master of all time. Of all the millions of codes and methods and analytical processes that the old man knew, Jack knew five. Maybe less.
It had been a difficult week; first weeks always are. Now he sat in the dark, stone walled room staring vacantly at the blank page before him. Books of cryptic answers and code-breakers surrounded him, but they were no use if he couldn’t see the words.
“Try heat,” the master prompted, pointing to the candle.
The master watched incredulously as the paper turned to ash.
