Silence. All she had ever known was silence. Silence accompanied the flashing fire truck speeding down the street, silence accompanied the airplanes flying over her house, silence accompanied the birthday parties of her friends, silence accompanied the fireworks celebrating the fourth of July, silence accompanied the dark storms that rained down in summer, silence accompanied the waves crashing on the shore, and silence accompanied the faces of her family. All she wanted to hear were the words “I love you,” for as long as she could remember she had yearned to hear those words. And she was only six.
