Thomas paces back and forth in his fancy parlor as he hears moans and cries from the bedroom. His father puts a hand on his shoulder and says:
“Stop pacing, she’ll be fine.”
In his heart he knows these words were true. He sits on the sofa and waits. After only a second he’s up and pacing again. ”Her moans have stopped! What’s happened?” he thinks as the nursemaid, Harriet, enters the room.
“Masta?” Thomas looks at her with worry in his eyes. Harriet laughs gently, “Ya’ll go on upstairs and see the glowin’ mama and ya’lls healthy little boy.”
You've captured an era in 100 words while describing an event that has been the same throughout history. Nice.
