Memorial Day {5.28.12}

they’ve become memories.
their beautiful names now engraved in monuments.
thousands. thousands of names etched in stone.
pictures of our country, slowly fading into the shallow sorrows of this world.
their heroic deaths forgotten and overlooked.
google says roughly 100,000,000 people have died to save this country.
one hundred million.
one hundred million.
an ominous, terrifying number.
so many families still grieve the death of a parent, sibling, cousin. he's gone. she is missing in action. he was shot and could not be saved.
the one hundred million people who’ve bravely entered the army, donning the camouflage gear and proudly walking into fire, knowing that they may never see the faces of their loved ones again. and some don't.
the least we can do is honor them, and thank them, thank them for giving up their beautiful lives for their country.
they deserve to be honored and remembered, rather than just words etched into stone.

don’t you think?
